Love, spring and agriculture

demeter_ceresIn ancient Greece the goddess of agriculture, grain, love, mothers-to-be was called Demeter, daughter of Saturn and mother of Persephone goddess of the underworld.

Along with most of the Greek pantheon, Demeter was adopted by the Romans receiving the name of Ceres and was celebrated on April the 19 th.

The temples dedicated to her were decorated with baskets of fruits, vegetables and flowers.

Demeter-Ceres was also associated with abundance and prosperity and in the Roman tradition she was sister of Jupiter, Pluto, Juno, goddess of marriage and Vesta, goddess of the sacred fire of home.
